Poly bags can be recycled in a number of ways, including composting, biodegradable polyethylene (BPA) bags, and polypropylene (PP) plastic bags.
BPA is a chemical used in the manufacture of some plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (Styrofoam), and vinyl. It is also used as a preservative in some food packaging. PP plastic is used to make polycarbonate (PC), which is the most common type of plastic used for food and beverage containers.
PC plastic has been shown to be more environmentally friendly than other types of plastics because it does not degrade over time. However, it is still considered a hazardous material by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because of its potential to leach into groundwater and surface water.
The EPA has classified PC plastics as “hazardous waste” under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and requires that they be disposed of in landfills, incinerators, or other approved facilities.
Can grain bags be recycled?
Some recycle programs claim to recycle grain bags to “energy,” but that means they’re just burning grain bags in an incinerator. We’re thankful that Eco-Cycle recycles our bags into usable materials. Over 2,000 lbs of polypropylene have been diverted from the landfill.

Are polypropylene bags recyclable?

“This study shows that it is possible to reduce the use of PET in grocery bags by up to 90 percent by replacing it with a more environmentally friendly material, such as polyurethane. This is an important step forward in reducing the environmental impact of our food supply.” The study was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
