Ballasts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: they regulate the amount of current flowing through the light bulb. The more current, the longer the bulb will last, and the more light you can get out of it.

What is a grow light ballast?
Grow light ballasts power high intensity grow bulbs and lamps by regulating the voltage to a high intensity discharge (hid) light or compact fluorescent light. Some ballasts can power specific bulb types while others are switchable and can power both HPS and HID bulbs.
The most common type of ballast is the “bulb” type, which is used to power a wide variety of bulbs, including incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, and LED. The bulb type is also referred to as a “ballast” or “battery” because it is a battery-like device that is attached to the light fixture.

Do all HPS bulbs need a ballast?
You can’t run an hps bulb without a fitting ballast. In the worst case scenario, you’re going to break the bulb, and in the best case, you’re setting an explosion up. The power of your HPS bulbs is determined by a ballast. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to buy one. You’ll also need a bulb holder.
This is a piece of metal or plastic that fits over the top of your bulb and holds it in place. You can find these at any hardware store, or you can make your own. I made mine out of 1/4″ plywood, but you could use any type of material you’d like. Just make sure it’s sturdy enough to withstand the weight of the bulbs you want to put in it.
It’s also a good idea to have a few spare bulbs in case you need them for something else later on. You’re now ready to connect the ballasts to your bulbs! The easiest way to do this is with a pair of pliers. Make sure you have the right size plier for the size of bulb you plan on using.
Why dont LEDs need a ballast?

Can a ballast catch fire?
An overheating ballast can become hot enough to ignite combustible ceiling tiles or any other combustible it contacts. The fixture needs to be checked for fire extension.
