Put shredded paper, soil and water together. Put the mixture in the bin and it will be three inches deep. Allow your worms to get used to the mixture for a day before feeding them. The mixture should be very moist and not forming puddles.
Once the worms have been fed, place them in a plastic bag and put it in the fridge for at least 24 hours. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months.

How long does it take to worm compost?
Kitchen scraps can be converted to compost in less than two weeks. If you keep a worm bin in your basement, garage or pantry, your worms will come back year after year.
What do you put on the bottom of a worm bin?
If you want to add food to your bin, dig a hole and bury it under the bedding. If you break up the larger pieces, it will help. This time, make sure you dig it deep enough so that you can see the bottom of the bin. If you don’t have access to a digger, use a shovel or other heavy object to push the dirt into the hole you just dug.
Be sure to leave enough room for your worms to burrow in. Once you’ve dug your hole, put the lid on and leave it in place for a few days. The worms will start burrowing in and you should be able to see them coming out of their burrows. When they’re done, they’ll be ready for you to feed them.
Can worms eat banana peels?
Bananas are a great and inexpensive snack for both us and our worms. Those peels are desirable to compost worms no matter what shape they’re in. They will make short work of what would have taken up space in your compost pile.
If you don’t have a banana peeler, you can make your own by cutting off the top of a ripe banana and using a sharp knife to cut the peel into thin strips. You can also use a food processor to chop the banana into smaller pieces.
How many worms should be in a worm bin?
If you want to start with a lot of worms, we recommend you start with 1 lbs. We recommend 1-2 lbs of worms per person if the worm bin is larger. If you have a smaller bedding bin, you may want to consider adding a few more worms to the mix.
How often should I feed my compost worms?
Feed the worms from once a week to every two days with a cup of food. You might want to keep a journal about how quickly your worms consume certain things. If you don’t have access to a pet store, you may wish to consider purchasing worm beds. The bed should be placed on a flat surface, preferably a table, so that worms can climb up and out of the bed and onto the floor.
Why are there no worms in my compost?
Could be your compost is too hot at the moment. If the water gets too wet, the worms will drown. If your bin has a plastic bottom, this would be more likely. They won’t be able to get out of the bin if it’s too wet or too dry. Worms can get stuck in the bottom of a compost bin if they are not allowed to climb out.
They can also get trapped in a bin that has been left open for a long period of time. It is best to keep your bins as dry as possible to prevent this from happening. The worms will then crawl out and you will be left with a clean, dry bin to put the compost in.
How often should you change worm bedding?
After worms are added, bedding should be kept moist but not soggy and the top 6 to 8 inches turned every 7 to 10 days to keep it loose. About every 6 to 9 months the old bedding should be replaced with properly prepared new bedding.
If you want to change bedding, remove the top 5 or 6 inches and place in a plastic bag and shake well to mix in the new worms. Worms can live for up to a year without food, but they will die if they are not fed regularly. Feeding worms once a week is the best way to maintain a healthy worm population.
How often do you water worm bins?
The entire worm farm will remain moist if five litres of fresh water is poured into the top working tray every week. The worms won’t be harmed by the sudden flood. In the hotter months of the year, the water table is lower and the temperature is higher, so it’s important to add water.
In the summer months, you may need to add a little more water to the tray to keep it from drying out too much. In the winter, it is best to leave it in place for a couple of weeks to allow the moisture to evaporate, and then remove it when it has dried out.
