Gardeners new to orchid growing know that healthy orchids don’t grow in regular soil. It’s too dense, it doesn’t drain thoroughly enough, and most orchids grow in the air. The best way to get the most out of your soil is to use a mix of organic and inorganic materials, such as compost, peat moss, perlite, or sand.

The organic materials help the soil retain water and nutrients, while the inorganics break down organic matter into nutrients that can be used by your plants. You can also add a little bit of lime to the mix to help it hold water. If you’re growing in a container, you can use the same mix, but you’ll want to make sure that the container is large enough to hold all of the plants you plan on growing.

Here’s a great Youtube Video that illustrates our ideas

Do I need special soil for orchids?

If you want to give plants breathing room, place them in a larger pot every year or two. Orchids need fresh potting mix every year or so, so it’s been a while since you’ve repot. This encourages proper air circulation and provides plants with the best nutrition.

If you don’t have a large pot, you can use a smaller pot that’s about the same size as the one you’re repotting into. You can also use smaller pots that are smaller than the ones you’ll be using for the rest of the growing season.

The smaller the pot is, the more space you have to work with and the easier it will be to keep your plants healthy and happy.

Can orchids grow in rocks?

Orchids grow in tropical rain forests trees, but they are also able to grow on rocks using the rock as an anchor. Terrestrial orchids can be found in other areas such as woodland, mountain sides, and in the meadow. The type of insects that are attracted to the flowers are the reason why orchids have developed certain types of blooms.

What kind of soil do you use for an orchid?

Depending on the type of orchid it can be grown in moss: (see list)

  • Fir bark
  • dried fern roots

  • Sphagnum moss
  • Rock wool
  • Perlite
  • Cork nuggets
  • Stones
  • Coconut fiber

lava rock or a blend that works for you.

Where is the best place to put a orchid?

The south or east-facing windows are the best spots for orchids to grow. The west windows are too hot and the northern windows are too dark. If you can’t find a good location to grow orchids, then placing them under artificial lights is the last resort.

Do orchids grow better in moss or bark?

The orchid industry loves moss because it is easy to pot and is cheaper than fir bark. Sphagnum moss can retain water for a long time, which is why the markets and nurseries adore it. Moss is also a very good insulator and can be used as a roofing material.

It can also be planted in the ground to provide shade and protection from the sun. Mosses are also excellent for mulching, as they are very low maintenance and do not need to be fertilized.

Can you repot orchids in normal compost?

We recommend that you don’t water your plants for at least a week before using the compost, it’s best to choose a compost that suits you as well as your orchid, ideally orchids like well drained compost, so if you are able to water regularly, then choose a very open.

Can you put orchids in glass containers?

Orchids cannot be grown in a glass container unless some guidelines are applied. The tall glass cone-shaped container is not appropriate for relative humidity percentages. Your orchid has a much higher chance of dying if you don’t have these two. If you are using a plastic container, make sure that the bottom of the container does not touch the ground.

If it does, the roots will not be able to get enough oxygen to grow properly. Also, if you use a container that is too small, you may not have enough room for all of your plants. You may have to move your plant to a larger container or move it to another room.

Can I use pebbles for orchids?

Clay pebbles can also be used on humidity trays – just add a layer of clay pebbles on a tray and pour some water on them. Put the orchid in its pot and place it on the pebbles. The humidity coming from below will be captured by the orchid. It is always handy to have LECA pebbles on hand.

If you want to make your own humidity tray, you can use a piece of cardboard or a sheet of paper. Just make sure that the tray is big enough to hold your orchids and that it has a hole in the middle to allow the air to flow in and out. If you don’t have one of these handy, then you will need to buy one. You can buy them at any garden centre or garden store.

How often should you water an orchid?

When the mix gets dry, it’s a good idea to water once per 7 days. The root rot, crown rot, and other over watering problems can be caused by too much watering.
