How long can I leave compost?
Compost can be kept indefinitely, but the longer it’s stored the more it loses. The best time to compost is three to four months after it’s done. Even after that, compost can be used. The compost breaks down more and more into the soil. The amount of compost you need depends on the size of your bin and the type of soil you are composting.
For example, if you have a 10-gallon bin, you will need about 1.5 to 2.0 pounds of organic matter per gallon of water, depending on how much water you add to the bin. If you plan to compost more than 10 gallons per year, then you may want to consider a larger bin to hold more compost.
What happens if you leave compost?
